MEMBERSHIP

Individual and group membership is open, however one can become a member after paying the required membership fee which is determined by the general assembly.

The organisation is governed by a board comprising 12 members. The Executive Director is appointed to the board as a secretary to the board and being responsible for the secretariat and day-to-day management of the affairs of the organisation.

VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL SKILLS TRAINING

The organisation runs a polytechnic school and is aiming to operate multiple polytechnic schools within different districts in Uganda.

OBJECTIVES

1. Provide alternative education and skills training for school dropouts.
2. Empower young women and vulnerable groups with employable skills
3. Enhance economic opportunities and self-reliance.

TARGET GROUPS

1. School dropouts (ages 10-25)
2. Young women (ages 15-30)
3. Vulnerable groups (e.g., orphans, persons with disabilities)

LYDO Polytechnic School offers the following programs:

1. Tailoring, bakery, building and construction,
2. Driving and mechanics, welding and metal fabrication
3. Carpentry and joinery, soap making, hotel management, arts and crafts, etc.

HEALTH EDUCATION AND PROMOTION

SUMMARY

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder affecting millions worldwide. It causes chronic pain, recurring infections, organ damage, and reduced quality of life. LYDO aims to empower families affected by sickle cell disease (SCD) in Uganda, where approximately 1–2% of newborns are affected and 13–15% of the population carries the sickle cell trait. Despite its significant impact, SCD often remains misunderstood and under-resourced.

CHALLENGES

1. Limited access to genetic testing and counseling
2. Inadequate healthcare infrastructure
3. Lack of awareness and education
4. Stigma and misconceptions
5. Limited availability of effective treatments

3. Access to effective medications: Such as hydroxyurea, pain management, and other treatments.

The organisation educates and promotes agriculture in different districts in Uganda.

3. Promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

STRATEGIES

1. Training and Capacity Building: Provide workshops, demonstrations and hands-on training on modern agricultural practices, soil conservation and irrigation management.
2. Demonstration Farms: Establish model farms to showcase best practices and new technologies.
3. Farmer Field Schools: Organise schools where farmers can learn from each other and from experts.
4. Extension Services: Provide regular visits, advice, and support to farmers.
5. Input Support: Provide access to quality seeds, fertilizers, and equipment.
6. Market Linkages: Connect farmers to markets, traders, and processors.
7. Climate-Smart Agriculture: Promote practices that enhance resilience to climate change.

ORPHANAGE

LYDO provides targeted support to orphans and other vulnerable children, including educational sponsorships, healthcare assistance, dressing, feeding, and a safe and nurturing environment, while empowering them with life skills and values for independent living. These orphans are identified through house-to-house surveys and by building relationships with local leaders, churches, and mosques, among others.

2. Vulnerable children (e.g., abandoned, neglected, abused).
